The 100 cruzados novos honours the poet Cecília Meireles (1901–1964). Beside her portrait on the front is one of her own drawings with handwritten lines from her «Canticles», and the back shows a child’s world of fantasies and lessons alongside her drawings of folklore, folk music and dance.
The new cruzado, the cruzado novo, lasted only from 15 January 1989 to 15 March 1990: it replaced the cruzado at a thousand to one, and its first notes were overprints on old notes for 1, 5 and 10 new cruzados. This note belongs to the currency’s own series, issued in 1989.
Against the light a watermark shows the profile of the Republic.
For a «writers on banknotes» set it is a note with a woman poet, and in a Brazil collection a value of the brief cruzado novo series whose design moved to the 100 cruzeiros in 1990. AU-UNC condition sits at the edge of uncirculated: there are virtually no signs of circulation, at most one light fold or a faint counting mark.
The VPcoins catalogue unites coins and banknotes from many countries and eras.
